The following is a justification for the Option 7 for the SCSS.

Option 7 relieves enough overcrowding from SCSS to preclude the modifications that would have to be made of the school were to approach 3200 students.

After correcting the number of students that would transfer from SCSS to HSS in Option 5, Option 7 moves more students.  Consequently, most arguments for Option 5 would pertain to Option 7.  It would provide as much finality as Option 5.  The advantage over Option 5 is that the students closest to HSS would be the students being shifted to HSS.

  • Note:  Option 6 moves only the section of Option 5 that remains at SCSS that is on the east side of Route95.  Consequently if the HSS projected enrollment is subtracted Option 6 “w/o phase-in numbers” the remainder is the number of students in that section of Lorton Station.  The only difference between Option 4 and Option 5 is that same area.  If the “w/o phase-in numbers” in Option 5 are subtracted from the Option 4 numbers, it should provide the number of students in the same area.  These numbers between these two calculations with the number provided are different.  There were two ways to rectify it.  One was to increase the number of students in the Mason Neck area by 77 students in 2011 or by increasing the number of students in that northern section of Lorton Station by 77 students in 2011.  If there were to be growth anywhere, it would be in the northern section of Lorton Station.  Without the additional 77 students, the section of Lorton Station would lose 18 students by 2011 which does not seem plausible.  Consequently, the most logical adjustment to get the numbers to match is to ass those students to the northern section of Lorton Station.  This causes the total number of the students that remain in SCSS to increase in Option 5 so that Option 7 shifts more students to HSS.
  • The only negative in the comparison to Option 5 is the demographic numbers. While they are larger than Option 5 and the staff recommendation, the total number of students is 14 additional ESOL (.65 of the current HSS 2011 estimate / .5% of the Option 7 population) and 26 F/R lunch students (1.05% of the current HSS 2011 estimate / .88% of the Option 7 population) from the staff recommendation.   These numbers are well below the variance in student population projections.  In other words the number are so small, that the normal variation in the number of students that actually attend and the number projected will be greater than this number and makes them insignificant.
    • Staff recommendation   35.4% ESOL   26.3 F/R
    • Option 5                                   36%   ESOL    26.5 F/R
    • Option 7                                   36.6% ESOL   27.2 F/R
    • The primary factor in the demographic impact comes from the section of Lorton Station that is added to Option 6 to form Option 7.  It lies on the eastern section of the Lorton Station.  Staff estimated that it has and will have around 246 to 234 students that are 52% ESOL and 60% F/R lunch students.  However these students will be going to HSS in both Option 5 and Option 7.
  • Just as in Option 5, this keeps Lorton Valley in SCSS.
